Last night I put a slice of cake in the fridge, planning to eat it this morning.

可是kě shì早上zǎo shang打开dǎ kāi冰箱bīng xiāng一看yī kàn,蛋糕dàn gāo不见了bù jiàn le!But when I opened the fridge this morning, the cake was gone!

Don't tell me Dad ate it? Just yesterday he said he was going on a diet.

Could it have been my little brother? But he wasn't home last night.

I went to ask Mom, and she said she never eats sweets.

难道nán dào是shì我们wǒ men家jiā的de猫māo吗ma?可是kě shì猫māo怎么zěn me会huì开kāi冰箱bīng xiāng呢ne?Was it our cat, then? But how would a cat open a fridge?

Then I thought: don't tell me I remembered wrong and actually ate it yesterday?

我wǒ越yuè想xiǎng越yuè糊涂hú tu——难道nán dào有yǒu小偷xiǎo tōu进jìn了le我们wǒ men家jiā,只zhǐ偷tōu走zǒu一块yī kuài蛋糕dàn gāo吗ma?The more I thought, the more confused I got — surely a thief didn't break in just to steal one slice of cake?

Just then, Dad walked over with a bit of white cream at the corner of his mouth.

他tā不好意思bù hǎo yì si地de说shuō:“对不起duì bù qǐ,我wǒ半夜bàn yè实在shí zài太tài饿è了le……”He said sheepishly, "Sorry, I was just too hungry in the middle of the night..."

我wǒ笑着xiào zhe问wèn他tā:“你nǐ不是bù shì说shuō要yào减肥jiǎn féi吗ma?”I laughed and asked him, "Didn't you say you were on a diet?"
