The Psychology of Money: Nobody Is Crazy (Part 1)
Grandpa hides cash in a box, his grandson keeps everything on his phone — and neither of them is crazy.

Xiao Li's grandpa has a strange habit. He keeps his cash in an old box at home. The bank is right outside his door, but he refuses to put all his money in it.小李觉得爷爷太奇怪了:“钱放在家里,多不安全!”Xiao Li thinks grandpa is so strange: "Keeping money at home — how unsafe!"
Xiao Li's own money is all on his phone. He pays with his phone and saves with his phone; often there isn't a single yuan in his pocket. 看不见,摸不着,这才不安全呢!”Grandpa just shakes his head: "Money inside a phone? You can't see it or touch it — THAT's what's unsafe!" Grandpa and grandson each think the other one is crazy. But is either of them really crazy?
There is a book called The Psychology of Money, written by an American author. He says decisions about money are rarely math problems — they are mostly psychology problems. Everyone learned what money means in a different world.
When grandpa was young, life was hard and things got more expensive every year. He watched with his own eyes as a neighbor's money became worthless within months. So for him, only cash he can see and touch feels safe. When Xiao Li was growing up, life kept getting more convenient.
He has never lost money, and the money on his phone has never once gone wrong. So for him, cash is the hassle: it gets lost, it gets dirty, and you have to make change. You see — neither of them is crazy.
They are simply making decisions from their own experience. When someone's decision looks strange to you, it's usually because you never lived their life.那天晚上,小李问爷爷:“您年轻的时候,钱出过什么事?”That evening, Xiao Li asked grandpa, "What happened with money when you were young?"
Grandpa told the story of his younger days, and for the first time Xiao Li listened quietly to the end. Afterwards, Xiao Li still pays with his phone, and grandpa still uses his old box. But they no longer think each other is crazy. When it comes to money, nobody is crazy — everyone simply believes the world they have seen.
